"Dr George" George Takata Tjapaltjarri
In my opinion Dr George is a very much under rated artist He had a very powerful "presence" which transposed to his art and I will never forget the "spine tingling" feelings as he sang his dreamings while he worked at Kintore. A Pintupi man, born circa 1930 in the Gibson Desert, to the south-west of Jupiter Well, "Dr" George came out of the desert with his family in 1964. A traditional healer he was associated with Kintore and Tjukula medical clinics, hence his name, "Dr" George. He began painting in the early 1980s , learning to use acrylic paint and canvas with other western desert painters.
His country spans some 150 Kilometres around Lake Macdonald including: Lake Mackay to the north, Sir Frederick Ranges and Lake Hopkins to the south, Jupiter Well to the west and Kintore to the east. Within this vast area are many traditional sites that he depicts including , the Tingari cycle and Snake dreaming.
(Dr. George was the most powerful artist I have ever met "his Presence" was goose pimply. Outback Art has his last painting from 2002.)
